A design exploration for a sustainable primary school offering community facilities and enriched with ICT commissioned by the Department for Education as an exemplar for their Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. Our design was based on passive principles of environmental control using thermal mass in floors & ceiling and wind towers to ventilate the classrooms. The site was noisy and we developed a double-walled glazed screen as a technical solution to provide natural ventilation while reducing ambient sound. External areas were designed in detail to promote outdoor learning.
