Swansea Print Works

In the cobble lanes of historic Swansea, a 19th century stone warehouse is transformed into the new home of the Swansea Print Workshop – a not-for-profit arts organisation. The building will create an important arts resource for locals and visitors alike, hosting regular seminars, exhibitions and a full educational programme.

Client: Swansea Print Workshop
Construction Value: £4.2 million
Location: Swansea

Crumbly Outside, Solid Inside

The design retains the original stone exterior, transforming the interior into print workshops, independent studios and two apartments for artists in residence.

At ground level, a gallery and café open out into a walled garden and outdoor workshop.  Above, the building culminates in a grand drawing studio and lecture space within a new contemporary roof extension.

“We felt that we were really being listened to and that our value system was addressed with tremendous attention to detail and quality”

“More than anything else we were impressed by the way that the design reflected the diverse needs of a group of artists which went way beyond the initial brief “
